Resist temptation!

The Bible says it is possible to resist every temptation. If you have been saved by Jesus, you no longer need to live as a slave to sin. In God’s Word, we find practical advice to fight temptation like saying no to sin, fleeing tempting situations, praying for strength, and shifting our thoughts.

Do you know these strategies to overcome temptation?

Flee:

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
- 2 Timothy 2:22

Resist:

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
- James 4:7

Pray for protection:

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
- Matthew 6:13

Transform your thoughts:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
- Romans 12:2

Memorize God’s Word, take time each day to pray, and put on the full armor of God so that you can stand firm against the enemy’s schemes (Ephesians 6:10–18). Be filled with the Lord daily and stay alert: with Christ, you can overcome.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
- Ephesians 6:10–11

Remember the wonders and goodness of God in your life

A good exercise to do when we find ourselves in the midst of difficult times is to remember the wonders God has done for us. Do you remember a time when you didn’t have enough money to buy something basic, but a friend helped you with a small amount? You were able to buy what you needed, and little by little, you overcame the financial hardship.

When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord;
he brought me into a spacious place.
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
The Lord is with me; he is my helper.
- Psalm 118:5-7a

When we go through hard times, it may feel like that season will never end. That’s why it’s good to look back and remember the many times we experienced God’s goodness. He blesses us constantly and in many ways. Let’s recall His wonders and His benefits today!

Many, Lord my God,
are the wonders you have done,
the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
they would be too many to declare.
- Psalm 40:5

Make a list of the wonders God has done for you over the past month. Remember His care and kindness, and how He helped you move forward. Lift up a song of gratitude and praise, for the Lord is good and always will be.

Speak without arguing

How can we disagree without fighting? The Bible teaches us that we should do everything with love and respect. When you disagree with someone, remember that this person was also created in the image of God and deserves your love.

Explain your opinion without insults or offense, and try to understand the other person. And if you think this will only bring confusion, avoid quarrels and do not argue about the matter. It is better to wait for another moment when you can talk about it with more clarity and calm. There are times when we show the greatness of our love and understanding by being willing to wait.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
- 1 Peter 4:8

We can evaluate our love for others by how willing we are to sacrifice for them in order to maintain peace. If we give more importance to being right, having the final word, or knowing more than the other person, we will be loving ourselves and our reputation more than our neighbor, contrary to what Jesus taught.

However, if we are willing to wait until we better understand the other person’s position, or if we consider that the other person needs time to reflect, we are showing a good level of love and maturity. Let us learn to wait and to love with all our hearts, speaking without arguing.
