You shall have no other gods

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.
- Exodus 20:2–3

The first commandment is very clear: we must not have any other god. Why? Because it was our God who freed the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. He is also the God who frees us from the slavery of sin and everything that binds us spiritually.

Other gods enslave and oppress. In ancient times, there were gods for almost everything, sun, crops, fertility... Today, we can idolize money, sex, work, family... But all of these things end up enslaving us in one way or another. Our God sets us free!

God also blesses us even before we choose Him. He chose and delivered the people of Israel because He wanted to. He didn’t choose a large or powerful nation, but one that seemed small and insignificant. Yet He rescued them and brought them to the promised land.

In the same way, God chose you and me before the foundation of the world and adopted us as His children through Jesus Christ, as we read in Ephesians 1. God is a giver, He is a redeemer, He is good. Why would we serve any other god?

Let’s not allow anything or anyone to take the place that belongs to God. Let’s choose to serve Him and love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Let us live for God, because He loves us, and we can trust in Him.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
- Psalm 34:8

God keeps His promises

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
- 2 Corinthians 1:20

Do you remember a time when someone fulfilled a promise they made to you? Maybe they promised to take you on a special trip for your birthday. You waited eagerly and excitedly for the day to arrive. And when it finally came, you were jumping and shouting as you got everything ready for the long-awaited outing. What joy!

Today’s verse tells us that all of God’s promises, those made in the Old Testament have been fulfilled in Jesus, a resounding "yes." The Messiah, whom the people of Israel had long awaited, came bringing salvation and eternal life for all. Glory to God for His love and faithfulness!

In the same way, in our own lives, God’s promises are fulfilled through Christ. In Jesus Christ we are saved; in Him we have life, peace, hope, provision, purpose, and everything we need for this life and the next.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
- 2 Peter 1:3–4

God always fulfills what He promises. His promises are declarations backed with a 100% guarantee. Thank God for the fulfillment of His promises in your life, and express your trust in Him and in His love. What you have not yet seen, you will see. Stand firm in faith.

Fruits that show repentance

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
- Matthew 3:8

Repentance cannot be just words. True repentance is accompanied by a real and visible change in behavior. This was the truth John the Baptist wanted to emphasize to the Pharisees and Sadducees. They could claim a thousand times to be descendants of Abraham, but their actions did not match their words.

True repentance produces fruit that shows the transformation that has taken place in the heart. A biblical example is Zacchaeus, a tax collector with a bad reputation. After an encounter with Jesus, he recognized his wrongdoing and bore fruit of repentance by choosing to make restitution for what he had defrauded:

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
- Luke 19:8

This shows us that repenting is not about how we speak or memorizing Bible verses. That alone does not make us holy. What truly matters is understanding what we read in the Word and allowing it to transform us. We need to repent of our sins and choose to live according to what God tells us. A repentant life seeks to be filled with the Holy Spirit daily in order to live according to God's will.

Let us produce today fruit that shows our repentance!
