Today's Word
Let suffering draw you closer to God
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
- Psalm 42:1
When reading Psalm 42, we notice that its author was exiled among a hostile people who mocked his faith in God. It is clear that he was suffering physically, emotionally, and spiritually. His soul was distressed, but even in the midst of that difficult situation, he chose to continue trusting in God.
His affirmations of faith help us see that, in the midst of all the agonizing suffering he experienced, he chose to seek God’s presence, draw near to Him, and trust in His power and goodness. He expressed his feelings before God with sincerity and, at the same time, affirmed his hope that God would act.
Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
- Psalm 42:5–6
It is not easy to have this attitude. Many times, when difficult moments of suffering and trials come, we forget that in God we have the source of hope. God’s power does not end when trials and pain come. On the contrary. God remains on His throne, strong, faithful, and ready to work on our behalf.
It is true that sometimes God does not act as quickly or in the way we would like, but He does not abandon us in the midst of pain. Choose to draw near to God, bringing your suffering to Him with the confidence that He is your salvation and your God forever. Praise God and trust Him.

Where Is Your Hope?
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
- John 16:33
Jesus assured us that in this world we would have troubles, but He also said that we can have peace in the midst of them, because He has already overcome the world. No affliction is more powerful than our God.
In the same way, He defeated death and is at the Father’s side interceding for us. Christ rose again and continues working on your behalf.
Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
- Romans 8:34
Even in the midst of life’s difficulties, you can believe that God has the best for you and that He will deliver you from any attack of the enemy. Do not rely on your own strength. Place all your hope in the steadfast love of your Lord and Savior!
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
- Jeremiah 29:11
Trust that what God has for you is good. Remain firm in the hope that the time of testing will pass, but the abundant life in Christ is eternal.
Are you standing firm in your hope in the Lord?
Day Before Yesterday's Word
Be filled with God
Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
- Ephesians 5:18b
Life with God is an invitation to abundance. This call to be filled with the Holy Spirit means we need to fill our lives with God and His Word. We shouldn’t be merely sprinkled with Sunday drops of God’s presence, but completely filled, overflowing with Him.
Seek the Lord every day; long for His presence. Talk to Him about what’s happening in your life and ask what you should do in each situation. The Lord’s presence in our hearts guides us and fills us with joy, knowing that we are never alone, for He is with us.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
he hears their cry and saves them.
- Psalm 145:18–19
Empty yourself of all bitterness, selfishness, resentment, stress, and sorrow. In doing so, you make room for the gift of God’s Holy Spirit! His Spirit within you will help you stand firm in Him and give you strength to overcome in His name.
This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.
- 1 John 4:13
Live with a heart full of Christ, and let His rivers of peace, joy, and life flow through you to everyone around you.
