God is greater

When David faced Goliath, he knew that the outcome did not depend on him. Goliath was nearly three meters tall and could easily crush David. But David knew that God was on his side and that He was far greater than any giant. Instead of focusing on Goliath’s enormous size, David chose to remember the moments when he had seen God’s greatness and power in action.

Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you."

When you have to face one of life’s giants, remember the great things God has done for you. Fill your heart with confidence and faith, ask God for help to defeat these giants, and go out to fight in His name.

Pay attention to what you think

A happy thought in the morning can set your day on the right path. A sad or anxious thought can lead you to spend the day filled with sadness or anxiety. Thinking about someone with kindness and goodwill can help you value that person and treat them kindly. But if you think about them with suspicion, you may try to avoid them and keep your distance.

Our thoughts influence our behavior, which is why it is important to monitor them. God’s Word itself speaks about the importance of carefully filtering what we think.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
- Philippians 4:8

When a troubling thought arises in our minds or tries to steal our peace, we should examine it in light of this verse. We can ask ourselves: Is this true? Is it honorable, just, pure, and kind? Does it lead me to admire and encourage, or to criticize and look down on others? Does it draw me closer to God and His will for my life, or pull me away from Him and what He desires for me?

Every day, we can pray like the psalmist:

Search me, O God,
and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the everlasting way.
- Psalm 139:23-24

Place your thoughts in God’s hands. Let Him examine your heart and fill it with His peace. Your days will be much better when you place your thoughts under the Lord’s guidance.

Word of the Day: simply trust in God

The Israelites were terrified! They were fighting the Philistines, and their army was being led by a giant. Goliath, who was a champion within the ranks of the Philistines, challenged the Israelites to send out their champion to fight him. No one was brave enough to do so, except for one young shepherd boy by the name of David. He was filled with faith in God and volunteered to face Goliath.

Despite being vastly outnumbered and facing a formidable opponent, David approaches Goliath armed only with a sling and five smooth stones. Goliath mocks him, but David declares his trust in God

"David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."
1 Samuel 17:45

With unwavering trust in God's strength and protection, David slung a stone at Goliath, striking him in the forehead and defeating him. This miraculous victory showcases the power of trusting in God even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. David's faith and courage inspire us to trust in God's guidance and provision in our own lives, knowing that with God, all things are possible.

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust
in the name of the Lord our God.
Psalms 20:7

We live in a material world of cars, money, and beauty, but all of these things must come to an end. Trusting in these things takes us a step further away from God and the life he has in store for us. But those who trust in God have their feet firmly on the Rock. Remember the story Jesus told of the man who built his life upon the rock, that man was ready to face the day-to-day challenges and struggles.

Today is a good day to ask yourself the question: who do I put my trust in? Everything but God will crumble away, but the Word of God will remain forever. Simply trust in the Lord, our God!
