Disobedience is a sin against God. The punishment for disobedience is death and separation from God. Disobedience also brings many problems in life because God's commandments are meant to protect us.

God desires our obedience. But we all disobey and need God's mercy to save us from punishment. That’s why God sent Jesus to earth. Now, those who repent are saved by Jesus! He helps us live in obedience.

Disobedience in the Bible

At times, God's Word refers to disobedience as rebellion, stubbornness, and even idolatry. Jesus said that we will be His friends if we do what He commands, which means obeying His Word. In a way, those who do not fulfill God's will are disobeying, as His enemies. Therefore, disobedience is rebellion against God; it is not trusting that He knows what is best for us.

Here are some passages that address disobedience:

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. - Ephesians 5:6

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.

- Ephesians 5:6

For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

- Matthew 5:18-19

Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.

- 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15

But Samuel replied:

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”

- 1 Samuel 15:22-23

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

- Romans 3:19-20

Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

- Romans 11:30-32

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved.

- Ephesians 2:1-5

For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

- Romans 5:19

Therefore, son of man, say to your people, ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.

- Colossians 3:5-7

To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

- Titus 1:15-16

They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

- Romans 1:29-32

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
