1. Internet and Hyperconnectivity

We live in an era of hyperconnectivity, where people are constantly connected to the internet, receiving all kinds of information and influence.

All this connectivity has both pros and cons, but you know there's a thin line to tread. We've gotta be careful because being glued to the phone or computer all day can harm commitments and relationships. The internet has a great ability to make us lose time.

The Bible speaks of laziness, there's a proverb that points out just how dangerous the laziness of 'a little folding of the hands to rest' is, but in our days that could easily describe people who open their smartphones and start swiping to distract themselves.

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
11 and poverty will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.
Proverbs 6:9-11

2. Objectification on Social Media - What the Eyes See

Social media allows people to share everything! Now pretty much every moment of our personal lives can be shared with others, too easily.

Unfortunately, many people, both Christians and non-Christians, male and female, have embraced sexual content on social media, posting photos of body parts, and completely forgetting their modesty.

Christians should not normalize this behavior but strive for decency and avoid posting such photos. Also, we should not follow people who post such content for the sake of our holiness, as it puts us in temptation.

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
Romans 13:13

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"
Matthew 6:22-23

3. Emotional Manipulation and Blackmail

Manipulating people to fulfill our desires is a sin. And yet, many people use emotional blackmail to get what they want, leaving others helpless.

The Apostle Paul wrote about holiness to the Thessalonians, he said:

and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.
1 Thessalonians 4:6

His words here are important in any context, he makes it clear that taking advantage of others is completely wrong.

4. Cancel Culture - Silence

Canceling has become a common practice on the internet. Anyone who says or does something wrong is no-platformed instantly, losing their voice, future chances, freedom, and more.

Christians should not do this. The Christian attitude toward someone who has done something wrong is to show support, and if the person repents, to forgive. Even if the person does not repent, we should show mercy and pray for that person, in love.

"You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."
Matthew 5:43-45

3 So watch yourselves.

“If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

Luke 17:3-4

5. Gossip - Don't Tell Me!

Gossiping remains one of the sins that most affects the life of the church, it can be like a wildfire that runs rampant through the community.

Talking about someone behind their back doesn't help the victim fix or explain themselves. James says that the tongue is like a spark capable of starting a fire.

11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.
James 4:11

6. Envy - The Grass is Greener...

Social media is a great showcase for showoffs. Many people decide to portray their lives as if they were living an Instagram lifestyle fairytale, taking photos next to fancy cars or infinity pools, so they appear as though they have it together, happy, rich, etc.

So when we see this online, it's so easy to get those feelings of envy for people, for their supposedly more joyful, fabulous, successful lives. But we must not be deceived! Everyone has their good and bad days, including those we follow. And we must recognize that social media does not faithfully represent real life.

Since everyone has their good and bad days, we should not envy anyone but be content with our God.

30 A heart at peace gives life to the body,
but envy rots the bones.
Proverbs 14:30

16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
James 3:16

7. Money, Money, Money - Wealth

Money is unavoidable; We need it to pay the bills, pay rent, buy food, have fun, and even invest in the Kingdom of God.

But be warned... it's not always the case that we always have complete control over money, sometimes it's the money that controls us! When we find ourselves only thinking about the best way or the fastest way to make money, hoarding cash, or spend excessively on our hobbies, we are serving money!

When it comes to cash, Jesus is very clear:

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."
Matthew 6:24

And the Apostle Paul talks about the greed of wanting more money:

9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:9-10

8. Friend of the World?

The church of Jesus belongs to the world to come, not to this one. The current world is dominated by evil and sinners, and we should not have the same practices as the unbelievers. Jesus spoke clearly about this with his disciples in the upper room:

“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you."
John 15:18-19

The church does not belong to the world, even though it is in the world. Just as people reject Christ, they will also reject the church, its faith, and its practice. We are labeled as old-fashioned, antiquated, fanatical, and so on. Because of this hatred, many may be tempted to compromise and offer a "middle ground," enjoying worldly practices and going to church services. In the face of such people, James said:

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
James 4:4

9. Church Life - The Body I Belong To

Unfortunately, young people all too often fall away from the church. When the community consists of mostly older people and the sermons are focused on their specific problems, young people feel left out.

Moreover, since the world often positions itself in opposition to the church, attacking it, offending it, and labeling it in various negative ways, young people can be tempted to leave the church.

It is vitally important for young people to have a clear understanding of the importance of the church, a biblical understanding of the reason why Christians go to church. Furthermore, they ought to have a role to play in it!

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body - whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
1 Corinthians 12:12-14

10. Doctrines for Life - Importance of Doctrine

In today's times, some doctrines are being set aside by churches to gain more followers. The problem with this is that the church becomes like a social club, a superficial gathering where people meet but never learn the truth that is in the bible.

Doctrines are crucial for the church to fulfill its role in the world of conveying the gospel! When talking about the existence of gifts and ministries in the church, Paul teaches that:

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
Ephesians 4:14

One of the purposes of ministries and gifts in the church is to develop the maturity of the church. In the passage above we see that the metaphor of a child maturing into an adult is used to illustrate the growth of those who have acquired some understanding of doctrine into those who have acquired a lot of doctrine.

One of the reasons knowing the bible is so important is highlighted in this text and many others; it is precisely so that people are not deceived and led astray by false teachers.

11. Bible Reading - The Light of My Path

Reading the Bible is central to the Christian faith, but in a world with so many distractions, many Christians don't get that regular contact with the Word.

The Bible is God's revelation to His people, the church. By studying it or meditating on it, we can learn more about our God and what He expects from us!

9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:9-11

12. The Power of Prayer - Knock-Knock

Prayer is the most basic practice of a Christian. However, it requires some level of self-discipline to maintain a healthy prayer life.

God expects us to pray constantly. We can trust that God has the power to resolve our issues, so we can bring our problems to Him.

7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."
Matthew 7:7-8
