Jesus' resurrection has been the greatest miracle in history! This glorious event is central to Christianity and represents Christ's triumph over death and sin. The Gospel tells that after being crucified, dead, and buried, Jesus rose on the third day. Many were eyewitnesses to Jesus’ resurrection, and His resurrection confirmed what He Himself and other prophets had predicted.
Through the resurrection of Jesus, Christians had and have clear and undeniable proof that He is the Son of God, and the certainty that everything Jesus Christ said is true. Also, through faith in His resurrection, believers are assured of the hope in the future resurrection promised in the Scriptures. When that happens, all human beings who died before the final judgment will come back to life.
How did the resurrection of Jesus happen?
During the rule of Pontius Pilate, Jesus was condemned by Jewish conspirators to die on the cross, one of the cruelest forms of Roman execution. He died on a Friday at Golgotha (or the Place of the Skull), during the days of the Passover celebration. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus took His body down from the cross and prepared it for burial. They placed Jesus in a new tomb, sealed and guarded by Roman soldiers.
On Sunday morning, a shining angel of the Lord rolled away the stone from the entrance and announced to the women the resurrection of Jesus, leaving the guards terrified. The women were the first to receive the news of the resurrection. They found the empty tomb and an angel who gave them instructions on what to report to the Lord's disciples.
Jesus appeared alive to Mary Magdalene, to the disciples, and to many others, demonstrating the reality of His resurrection, even to those who doubted, like Thomas. These events showed that Jesus defeated death, just as it had been prophesied in the Scriptures. That day, the world changed forever.
Main Lessons from the Resurrection of Jesus
1. The resurrection proves that Jesus told the truth
Defying the natural logic of human life, Jesus rose after having been dead for 3 days (Matthew 12:40, Mark 9:31, Luke 9:22). He had prophesied this to everyone long before it happened. And, gloriously, by His infinite power, Jesus overcame death and came back to life (Romans 6:4, Revelation 1:18). All of this shows and teaches us that He is the truth and everything He said is true. His resurrection proves His greatness and faithfulness (Acts 2:32).
2. Death has been defeated
The Bible says that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). But Jesus never sinned! (1 Peter 2:22). Therefore, He could not remain dead. Jesus' death was sufficient and effective to forgive sins. Being innocent, by taking the place of sinners, Jesus bore the guilt and punishment of those who trust in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21, Isaiah 53:4-6).
In this way, He took the punishment, justifying and freeing His disciples from future punishment. He did not remain dead, because death could not stop the author of life. Jesus rose again and is still alive today! He defeated death and is now with the Father. This means that death has lost its power. Jesus showed that death is not the end (John 11:25-26).
3. Hope for those who believe
The resurrection of Jesus brings living and real hope (1 Peter 1:3)! In addition to enabling Christians to live by faith through the Holy Spirit, the resurrection of Jesus also grants power against the dominion of sin. The resurrection of Jesus dispels our despair and fear of the future (Philippians 3:10-11)..
Just as Jesus rose, we too can live free from darkness and evil and rise in the future (Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 15:20-22). Jesus promised eternal life to everyone who believes in Him (John 3:16, John 11:25-26). Death is no longer a reason for despair. In Jesus, we can receive new life! Because He rose and lives, we can believe in a tomorrow full of peace in His presence (Revelation 21:3-4).
