The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity. He is the presence of God that acts and dwells in our lives. When Jesus saves you, the Holy Spirit takes up residence within you! The Holy Spirit plays a fundamental role, enabling us to live a transformed life and fulfill God's purpose.
Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to His disciples after His ascension. In John 14:16–17, He said that the Spirit would be the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who would remain with us forever. This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers, empowering them to witness and live transformed lives.
The Holy Spirit empowers us in various ways. He grants us spiritual gifts to serve the community and build up the church (1 Corinthians 12:4–11). Additionally, He guides us in our decisions and helps us understand the Scriptures (John 16:13). Without the Holy Spirit, we would be lost in our own strength.
The Holy Spirit also works in us to produce the fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22–23. He enables us to develop characteristics such as love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness. This transformation is a tangible sign of His presence in our lives.
The power of the Holy Spirit guides us, empowers us, transforms us, and produces fruit in our lives. Therefore, it is crucial to seek an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to work in us fully, so that we may live lives that glorify God and reflect His love and grace.
4 Things the Holy Spirit Does in Your Life
1. Convicts of Sin
But very truly, I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.
- John 16:7-8
It is through the Holy Spirit that you become aware of your sins, the punishment you deserve, and the need to be saved. He invites you to repent of your sins and points to Jesus as the only one who can save you.
2. Guarantees Salvation
Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
- 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
The Holy Spirit enters your heart and gives you the assurance of salvation through faith. He brings you to Jesus and gives you the comfort of knowing that your sins have been forgiven.
3. Teaches
But when he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
- John 16:13
Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to teach you. It is through the Holy Spirit that you can understand spiritual things and apply the truth of the Bible to your life. The Holy Spirit reveals the truth of God.
4. Produces spiritual fruit.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.
- Galatians 5:22–23
The Holy Spirit also produces various effects in your life that mark you as a Christian. Your attitude changes; you stop living for sin and start living for the things of God.
