The Parable of New Wine in Old Wineskins is found in the Gospels of Matthew 9:17, Mark 2:22, and Luke 5:37-38. Jesus told this story to show that we need to be ready and open to accept His teachings.
In Jesus' time, people used containers made from animal skins, called wineskins, to store wine. Over time, these wineskins would become old and lose their ability to handle the pressure from new, fermenting wine.
Jesus used this everyday situation to teach an important lesson: just as new wine requires new wineskins, His new and revolutionary teachings needed open minds to be accepted.
Here is the parable of new wine in old wineskins from the book of Luke:
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.

Putting new wine into old wineskins would cause the skins to burst, resulting in the loss of both the wine and the containers. Only new wineskins could withstand the fermentation of new wine without breaking.
Jesus compared the new wine, representing His teachings and transformative message, to the old wineskins — or leather vessels in some translations — which symbolized the existing religious traditions and structures of the time.
The words Jesus spoke were new in the midst of a population stagnated by religiosity. To accept Christ's word, a true renewal was needed: a renewed mind (new wineskin) for a renewed message (the message of salvation through Christ Jesus).
Meaning of New Wine in New Wineskins
When Jesus mentioned old wineskins, He was referring to the religious structures and practices of His time, which were often rigid, inflexible, and unable to accommodate the new revelation embodied by Him.
On the other hand, the new wine represents Jesus' message, which brought spiritual renewal, transformation, and a new way of relating to God.
This parable teaches us that Christianity cannot be merely a blind adherence to traditions or a set of empty rules. Jesus came to bring a New Covenant, a new way to relate to God based on love, grace, and faith.
Therefore, it’s essential to renounce any practices that prevent us from drawing closer to Christ.
Pouring New Wine into New Wineskins
Just as old wineskins couldn’t contain new wine, a rigid and legalistic mindset cannot contain the transformative power of the Gospel. We need to be new wineskins—flexible and open to God’s work in our lives. This involves constantly seeking an intimate relationship with God, studying, and understanding the Scriptures.
By living according to Jesus' teaching and allowing the new wine to be poured into new wineskins, we will experience the fullness of Christian life, spiritual growth, and authentic testimony to others.
Be open to the constant renewal of the Holy Spirit, let go of past limitations, and embrace the abundant life that Jesus offers you.
