The love of God is the reason we are not consumed. What would become of us without the Lord’s mercy? In the passage of Lamentations 3:22-23, the prophet Jeremiah emphasizes the endless mercy of God:

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

- Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV)

22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

- Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV)

22 It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed,
because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning:
great is thy faithfulness.

- Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

What is the Meaning of Mercy?

To be merciful is to be compassionate, benevolent, and kind. Instead of condemning us, God, in His mercy, sent His Son Jesus so that we would not suffer eternal punishment.

"The wages of sin is death," but God's mercy provided us the opportunity to be redeemed and receive eternal life. If God had not desired to save us, we would have no alternative but to suffer the consequences of our actions:

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

- Exodus 33:19 (NIV)

God is Good!

Yes, God is good, and His goodness is perfect! He chose to love us. The way God cares for our lives reveals His goodness and compassion. This love we receive should be reflected in obedience to God and acts of mercy toward others.

9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

- Matthew 7:9-12 (NIV)

When we come to understand God’s mercy, we become more loving. Freely we have received divine love, and freely we should give. Acting with mercy toward others is a choice that bears good fruit and reflects God’s love.
