Theme: What does it mean to be the light of the world?

Objective: To explain the relationship between the symbol of Light in the Bible and the truth conveyed by Christ, so that people may expose themselves to the Light of Christ and reflect this same Light through the Truth that transforms lives.

Base text: Ephesians 5:8

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

- Ephesians 5:8

Introduction

Being the Light of the world means manifesting God's love and truth before everyone, wherever we go. This is what Christ did and empowers us to do. When Jesus enlightens us, He not only makes evident the love and will of our Heavenly Father for us but also exposes evil, aiming for our repentance and forgiveness.

Jesus is like a light that helps us see clearly what is good, distancing us from what is wrong and evil. The Bible often uses the comparison of light and darkness to show the contrast between illumination and darkness in various aspects of life, whether moral, intellectual, or spiritual.

Christ illuminates all areas of our lives, including what is hidden, whether right or wrong, in our actions, in our way of thinking, or in our faith. In the same marvelous way, He makes us shine His light throughout the world, reflecting His grace and transformation.

"I am the Light of the World": Jesus is the True Light

When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

- John 8:12

Jesus Christ is the true Light, who came into the world and enlightens everyone who believes (John 1:9). Just as light illuminates darkness and guides the way, Jesus is the one who brings spiritual clarity, truth, and direction to humanity. He is like a lighthouse shining in the darkness of our sea. He is the light of hope at the end of the tunnel of disillusionment and affliction. To ignite this blessed Light, all it takes is to trust in Him with all our hearts.

Jesus is the source of Light. He is like a bright light that drives away sin and ignorance, giving the chance for salvation and eternal life to all who believe in Him. When He says 'I am the light of the world,' He invites us to find in Him the supreme Sun, which illuminates everything and allows us to see the meaning and purpose in life. He is the light that shines in our darkness.

"You Are the Light of the World" - Understanding the Meaning

This impactful statement reflects the great privilege given to every believer: to carry the Light of life wherever they go. It is natural to make God's love shine, illuminating all who are in the darkness of despair, deception, emptiness, fear, and affliction.

Furthermore, it also expresses a rewarding mission. Just like our Lord, every Christian has the responsibility to testify about God's Truth and grace.

You are the light of the world.

- Matthew 5:14a

When Jesus said that His followers were also the light of the world, He was referring to those who believed in Him, having been enlightened by Him. For the others, His goal is that they also become children of the Light and thus be filled with the Light of life, to spread it throughout the world. But for this, it is necessary to:

1. Believe in the Light

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.

- John 12:35-36

In other words, Jesus wants you to believe, to become a child of the Light. Consequently, His will is that each Christian reflects His love and truth, as if He Himself were walking through our steps today.

2. See Through God’s Light

For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.

- Psalm 36:9

Where are your eyes set? God is the source of life, wisdom, instruction, strength, and grace: look to Him. If you believe in Jesus with all your heart, you can walk with the assurance that the Lord's Light will guide you on your journey. Step out of the darkness of indecision and walk truly with the Lord, so that He may guide you by the Light of Christ.

3. Illuminated by the Word of Christ

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

- Psalm 119:105

The Bible projects all the light that illuminates us. It is through it that we have access to all the Truth that Christ has conveyed to us. Therefore, read, study, listen, and seek to understand God’s Word for yourself.

4. Produce Good Fruits in the Light

For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth

- Ephesians 5:9

Be careful of the risk of living a double life and the hypocrisy of darkness. What are you like when no one is looking? What kind of fruits are you producing? Good fruits or those produced in darkness, deceptive fruits? God calls you to be a transparent person and live a life full of the virtues of Christ: goodness, righteousness, love, truth, etc.

5. Called to His Wonderful Light

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

- 1 Peter 2:9

The Light of Christ is like a great spotlight that dazzles us and removes all disguise. Because we have an inexhaustible source of light, we need to proclaim the virtues of the Lord. This includes making a difference in a chaotic and dark world. It includes fleeing from worldly vices and living the virtues of the Lord. It also involves proclaiming the good news of the change that Christ brings to our lives.

How to Be Light in This World?

According to the Bible, being a light to this world means living according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. This goes beyond following rules or behaviors; it means having a lifestyle similar to that of the Lord.

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from allsin.

- 1 John 1:5-7

Fellowship with Christ and with the Church of Christ makes all the difference. Walk in the Light of Jesus, not in your own. Like Him, love, be humble, forgive, live in peace with everyone, seek justice and truth, and in this way, be illuminated by the Lord.

Only when Christians become more like Jesus can they reflect God’s will and have a positive impact on society.

If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, 10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

- Isaiah 58:9b-10

Conclusion

Being the Light of the world, in practice, involves living a life of love, humility, honesty, forgiveness, and truth, while sharing the message of hope and faith with others. The good things we do out of love and solidarity bring light to other lives. This will ignite the flame of Christ in us, and God will be glorified.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

- Matthew 5:14-16

The word of Jesus is a call for us to live a life that reflects the values of the Kingdom of God and that illuminates the path for those around us.
