Seeking the Lord is an opportunity and a privilege for anyone willing to approach him. But this opportunity won't be available forever. We can discover why in the powerful verse from the book of Isaiah 55:
Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
Isaiah 55:6
In the context of the verse, the prophet Isaiah expresses his concern for the people of Israel in Babylonian exile. Under the influence of another culture, with separate traditions, and a different religion, the Israelites were at risk of forgetting the Lord. Knowing that His people were turning from him, God, through His prophet spoke. This verse, and the following one, (" Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.") is an open invitation to those who are far from God to return back and receive forgiveness.
Isaiah's greatest concern was that the Israelites would lose their purpose, and their identity as God's people, people who praise and worship the one God, who believe in and know his will and his principles. For this reason, it was of great importance that the people remained faithful to the Lord, following His Law.
The Bible warns us: seek God while you can find him. There will certainly be a time when this will no longer be possible. God offers his grace and forgiveness today! Tomorrow may be too late...
In Matthew 7:23, Jesus talks about the final judgment: "Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’". These words sound harsh, but the truth is that those who have not truly sought the Lord will have to spend eternity away from him. After leaving this life, many will wish that they had met the Lord while they were still living in this world. But they will no longer have that chance.
Seek the Lord while you can! Let it be your greatest focus, for only God can give us hope, save us, answer our prayers, and remove the restlessness from our souls.
The good news is that if we choose to seek him, we will find him “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7). Jesus assures us that God is always available and never absent. But, it is our responsibility to seek God through the noise of culture, traditions, and other idols.
