From the Ten Commandments, the first one that comes with a promise of blessing is the commandment to honor your father and mother. God blesses those who honor their parents with a long and good life. When you honor your parents, you honor God, the Father of all!

Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, - - Deuteronomy 5:16

Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

- Deuteronomy 5:16

Honoring means showing respect and appreciation for your parents. Even when they make mistakes (no one is perfect!), you can still show respect for them. The relationship with your parents changes as you grow older, but respect should always be present.

In Childhood

A child’s duty is to obey their father and mother. God gives us parents for our good, to take care of us and teach us the essentials of life. The orders of parents are meant to protect and teach, and discipline helps us learn the difference between right and wrong. Obeying parents teaches valuable lessons for life.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. — Ephesians 6:1

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

- Ephesians 6:1

In Adulthood

In adulthood, the relationship with parents changes. You become increasingly independent and responsible for your own actions. Instead of giving orders, parents offer advice and share wisdom. A wise child listens to their parents' advice and considers it. You may disagree, but listen with respect. Your parents can offer a more experienced perspective.

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. - Proverbs 1:8-9

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

- Proverbs 1:8-9

In Their Old Age

When you were young, your parents provided the care you needed. Now, in their old age, it’s your parents who may need care. When your parents are elderly or in a vulnerable situation, it’s your opportunity to show your gratitude in a practical way. When you care for your elderly parents, you honor them and God.

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.

- 1 Timothy 5:4

God Is Our Father

All parents make mistakes - except one. God is the Father of every person in the world because He gives life to all. He is the perfect Father who loves you and has the best for your life. Just as you should honor your parents, you should honor God.
