God doesn't always use the strongest, smartest, or most famous people to accomplish great works. Throughout the Bible, we see many examples of flawed and struggling individuals being used greatly by God. If God used these biblical characters who didn't give up, He can also use you.
1. Caleb
Who said that a career ends at 60? Caleb was 85 years old when he entered the Promised Land and claimed his portion of land! It's never too late to do the work of God.
Because of his faith in God, Caleb survived 40 years in the desert after the exodus from Egypt. At 85 years old, he conquered the territory of Hebron, which was given to his descendants. What's more, he felt as vigorous as he did when he was 40!
2. Ehud
The only thing that Ehud had going for him was the fact that he was left-handed. The Bible doesn’t mention that he was particularly strong, performed miracles, or had any special talents. But he made a small sword, hid it under his clothing, and when no one was watching, he used his left hand to kill the leader of the Moabite oppressors.
Sometimes it seems like we don’t have anything special about us. We don’t stand out, and we feel that we can’t do anything important. But that doesn’t stop God! He can use us just as we are.
3. The Slave Girl of Naaman’s Wife
Naaman was a Syrian general, an enemy of the Israelites. His wife had a slave girl who was a captured Israelite girl. When Naaman contracted leprosy, the slave girl told him about the prophet Elisha. Naaman visited Elisha and was healed!
This girl had lost everything because of Naaman’s troops: her land, her family, her freedom… She was at the bottom of the social hierarchy and had no reason to help anyone. But she became a blessing! Even when we find ourselves in the worst situations, we can be used by God.
4. Amos
Amos took care of sheep and worked in fruit harvesting. He was a country man, with no special education or important family background. He didn’t even consider himself a prophet, but God called him to proclaim His message to the people of Israel.
Amos was courageous and denounced the abuses happening in Israel. He called the people to repentance and justice. He was persecuted and despised, but he did not give up. His book remains relevant today. Amos is proof that you don’t need a great education or an important position to do the work of God.
5. James, Brother of Jesus
James's older brother was Jesus, the Christ! What a privilege! However, during Jesus's ministry, James and his other relatives did not believe in Him. How could the brother he grew up with be the Savior of the world? But later, he converted.
God gives second chances. After coming to faith, James became one of the main leaders of the Jerusalem church (and of the early church as a whole). He was highly respected, and his opinions were very influential. James even wrote a book of the New Testament! We may start off poorly, but when we turn to Jesus, He can use us in powerful ways.
