Family is very important to God; in fact, the concept originated with Him. God could have created us to live in isolation, but He didn’t. We need one another not only for the continuation of the human race but also to support, build up, and bless the place where God has placed us.
1. The Origin of Family
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
- Genesis 1:27-28
God created man and woman and blessed them, giving them a mission with two parts. First, to multiply, be fruitful, and fill the earth with children. Without the union of man and woman, this continuity wouldn’t be possible. The second part of the mission was to subdue the earth: to care for, cultivate, and rule over the animals.
Human beings were created in God’s image and given a purpose assigned by Him. We are called to contribute wherever we are. Beyond that, unlike animals, humans possess body, soul, and spirit, which enables us to have a personal relationship with God, the source of love and wisdom.
2. Unity in Marriage
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
- Genesis 2:24
Every new marriage should prioritize the union between husband and wife, living according to God’s commandments. While we still belong to the families we grew up in, marriage establishes a new family unit where the couple becomes one. Together, they will make decisions before God, seeking His will for their shared future and mutual well-being.
3. The Spiritual Life of the Family
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
- Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Parents should fill their hearts and minds with God’s Word so they can teach it to their children. Their loving and consistent example, living in obedience to God, will inspire and bless their family. A family that loves God naturally shares how He works in their daily lives and intervenes in their challenges.
4. Worshiping God Together
Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before Him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.
- 1 Chronicles 16:28-29
There is a special bond in families that worship God together. It brings great joy to go to the temple as a family to glorify God for His daily blessings.
A family united not only by blood but also spiritually will enjoy a deeper and more meaningful relationship. They will be united in spirit, receiving the blessings God bestows on those who serve Him.
5. The Blessing of Children
Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.
- Psalm 127:3
The children God gives us are part of the blessing He bestows upon us. We should not view them as an economic burden or a pressure. On the contrary, we are to love them, raise them, teach them to be good citizens, and share with them all the good things God has given us.
6. Properly Instructing Children
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
- Proverbs 22:6
Parents must teach their children values, how to behave acceptably and respectfully toward everyone. It is also the responsibility of parents to instruct their children in the truth of the Gospel, teaching them what it means to love and follow Jesus. A solid spiritual foundation will help them face the challenges life brings.
Everything children learn during their childhood will shape them for the rest of their lives. Let us be responsible parents who love and teach our children in the way of the Lord.
7. Obedience to Parents
My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
- Proverbs 6:20
Children are to obey their parents. This refers to fathers and mothers who teach their children God’s commandments. Parents who love God will not impose unreasonable demands on their children. As children grow and study God’s Word for themselves, they will begin to understand the wisdom behind their parents' commands and the blessings that come from living a life of obedience to God.
8. Blessing Future Generations
Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.
- Proverbs 17:6
The family must value the contribution of all its members. A strong family appreciates everyone, whether they are children, grandchildren, grandparents, cousins, or uncles. They celebrate each other’s successes, care for one another, encourage, and help in times of illness or need.
Grandparents rejoice in seeing their children raise and nurture grandchildren with the same love and dedication they once gave. Over time, children also learn to appreciate the effort and sacrifice their parents made in raising them in an environment full of love and stability.
9. Striving for Unity
If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
- Mark 3:25
It is sad to see families that only communicate to argue or don’t speak at all. We must actively work on family unity, spending time together not only at home but also by walking, exercising, or relaxing together. The family should have common goals and dreams and celebrate when they are achieved. We glorify God when we strive to maintain peace and harmony in our families.

10. Caring for and Providing for Our Own
Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
- 1 Timothy 5:8
Within the family, we must care for and provide for our loved ones. We need to be attentive to the needs of our family members and help them to the best of our ability. We should not close our hearts to their real needs.
The foundation of our faith is unconditional and sacrificial love—the love that God showed us by sending His Son Jesus to die in our place. Our daily lives should reflect growth in this area, showing this kind of love to others, especially to our family.
11. Acting with Wisdom
A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.
- Proverbs 15:20
A wise child will bring joy to their parents’ hearts. They will not engage in unnecessary conflicts with them, but will honor and bless them with their words and actions. They will cling to God, the source of wisdom, and make decisions that please Him and bless their parents.
A foolish child disregards the teachings of their parents and causes sadness and pain, especially to their mother. A fool rejects the wisdom that comes from God and lives in rebellion against Him and their parents.
12. Passing Down the Right Path
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.
- Proverbs 4:1-2
Parents should take time to speak with their children, teaching them to make good decisions and walk on the right path. Sometimes we expect our children to behave a certain way but fail to sit down and explain what we expect of them and why obedience is beneficial.
Children, for their part, should listen when their parents correct them and learn to make decisions that help them grow as individuals. Over time, they will remember their parents' advice and be grateful.
13. The Fear of the Lord Brings Blessings
Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord.
- Psalm 128:1-4
Fearing the Lord means giving Him the reverence and respect He deserves. God values and rewards those who recognize His lordship over their lives and live within His will.
There are specific blessings for those who fear God and obey His commands. For example, the fruits of their labor will be rewarding, and they will experience well-being. There is also the promise of offspring, joy, and abundance. One of life’s greatest blessings is a family, and a family that lives in love and harmony is incomparable.
14. Above All, Love
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
- 1 Corinthians 13:7
A family without love will not overcome the challenges life brings. Family members must be willing to ask for forgiveness and forgive, to believe in each other’s goodness and love, and to overlook the little quirks or flaws that sometimes annoy us.
The only perfect love is God’s love. Let us fill our lives with it, allowing His love to flow through us and bless the entire family.
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
- 1 John 4:16
15. Joshua 24:15
