There is nothing that compares to our God! No matter how much we try to measure the greatness and excellence of the Lord, it is impossible to fully comprehend who He is. No matter how we try to describe Him, everything will always fall far short of what God truly can do, accomplish, and is!
No human construction, discovery, or act of kindness can compare to the love and perfection of God. No matter how beautiful or admirable our deeds may be, they pale in comparison to God.
In the book of Isaiah, God Himself asks His people, who were inclined to seek idols and carved images:
To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.
- Isaiah 40:25
No one. That is the most accurate answer because nothing compares to the holiness, justice, and power of God. The psalmist affirms this as well:
Among the gods there is none like you, Lord; no deeds can compare with yours.
- Psalm 86:8
There is no one like Him, on earth or in heaven! There is no other being, no other god that compares to the Lord. Even though certain attributes may be communicable to His creatures or there are cheap imitations in idols and false gods, He is the Great "I Am," the Supreme Creator.
Comparisons in the Bible
But why does the Bible make some comparisons or analogies to God?
This happens as an expressive (metaphors and allegories) and didactic (familiar figures) resource used by the human authors to demonstrate or teach readers certain characteristics of God.
We do this too, saying that someone is "as sweet as honey" because they are kind and pleasant, or describing someone as a "machine" because they work hard or are very dedicated. This doesn’t mean the person is literally a sweet treat or a piece of equipment, but it highlights specific qualities of those individuals.
Here are some examples of comparisons (or metaphors) related to God in the Bible:
- Consuming fire (Deuteronomy 4:24, Hebrews 12:29)
- Hen gathering her chicks (Matthew 23:37, Luke 13:34)
- Strong tower, refuge (Psalm 9:9, Psalm 46:11, Psalm 94:22, etc.)
- Rock (2 Samuel 22:3, Psalm 62:6, Psalm 61:3, etc.)
- Shepherd (Psalm 23:1, John 10:11, 1 Peter 5:4)
- Shield (Psalm 84:9, Proverbs 30:5, 2 Samuel 22:31, Psalm 18:30)
- Sun (Psalm 84:11, Isaiah 60:19-20)
There may be other comparisons, but the last one, in particular, points us to an interesting association:
This psalm tells us that the Lord is a sun, and indeed, He is the eternal Light, salvation, shield, and protection.
Have you ever thought about how important the sun is for life on earth? Not only does it provide light and heat, but it also brings countless other benefits to all living organisms in nature. The sun is essential. Through it, we can see, mark cycles and seasons, navigate space, and maintain physical and mental health. For these and many other reasons, this star is fundamental to the continuation of life as we know it.
Similarly, God is central among His people, just as the sun is to the solar system. The Lord is the indispensable source of life for the entire universe. Despite this, poetic or pedagogical comparisons can never truly equate God to anything in this world.
Limited Comparison
Even this fascinating association with the sun is so limited and diminished when we consider the infinite greatness of our Heavenly Father. God is far superior to the sun, for He is the one who created it! The sun is merely a point of reference for our finite minds to grasp the greatness and power of the Lord. For us, there is nothing visible, so vast and powerful, that can be compared to God.
Distortion: Worshiping the creature instead of the Creator
Unfortunately, some people seek guidance for their lives in celestial bodies (through astrology). There are also cultures that worship the sun as a type of deity. But we know that the sun is just a celestial body created by God. Today, it is known that there are stars much larger than our sun in the universe. Yet it was God who formed all the celestial bodies and stars, and there is no one and nothing greater than Him! The Lord is incomparably greater than all that exists...
God: Completely Incomparable
Through the Holy Bible, we come to know His qualities and mighty deeds. This gives us a small glimpse of His immense power, wisdom, and grace. God is the Creator of the sun, the other stars, all the galaxies, and planets in the universe. This is our God! He is the:
Incomparable Creator
But God made the earth by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom
and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
- Jeremiah 10:12
Incomparable Power
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength.
- Ephesians 1:18-19
Eternal God
The Incomparable Love
Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.
- Psalm 36:5
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
- John 3:16
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
- 1 John 4:16
The Incomparable Forgiver
Jesus Manifested the Incomparable Grace of God
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
- Ephesians 2:6-7
The One True God, Worthy of Glory
Despite being so great and excellent, the Lord cares for us and loves us with an everlasting love. He revealed Himself through Jesus (Hebrews 1:3) and desires that we live out His true love. Trust in the sovereign Lord and seek to know Him more (John 17:3) through His Word. He is the incomparable God!
